Dubai seen from space

The scale of modern urban development can often only be appreciated when seen from space. Here, the blue area below centre is an artificial lake. In the upper right corner of the lake is the Burj Khalifa, at 829.8 metres the world’s tallest man-made structure, casting a long shadow towards the upper right and the First Intersection on Sheikh Zayed Road. Below the tower is a large grey complex, this is the Dubai Mall. With more than 600 shops, an aquarium and an ice rink, it is the largest shopping mall in the world. The tower and mall are part of a two square kilometre development called Downtown Dubai that is estimated to cost 20 billion US dollars to build. This image was gathered by a French Pléiades satellite from an orbital altitude of 685 kilometres.
